Allen Iverson will always be known as one of the most dynamic guards to ever play the game of basketball.
While the 11-time NBA All Star is already in the most prestigious of company as a Hall of Famer, he’ll have even more elite talents around him later this month during the Inaugural Allen Iverson Roundball Classic. Iverson’s high school all-star game, set for Friday, April 21 at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, VA, will feature 24 of the nation’s top players - including 20 players ranked in the ESPN Top 100.
“We are beyond excited to be bring the Allen Iverson Roundball Classic to the world,” says Bobby Bates, event organizer and chief executive officer of Always Impressive Enterprises. “Partnering with SUVtv to live stream the event will allow people all across America and the world to be a part of this experience”.
SUVtv will broadcast the all-star game at theSUVtv.com and provide additional coverage from the three-day event. “The Inaugural Allen Iverson Roundball Classic will mix elite basketball talent with recognition & perspective from one of the best NBA players ever,” says Marques Burnett, Founder of SUVtv. “We’re looking forward to being a part of this unique event and making sure as many people as possible can be a part of it online.”
While Duke signee, Gary Trent, Jr., Kentucky signee Jarred Vanderbilt, and MJ Walker (undecided), are just a few of the top tier players on the roster, the uniqueness of the Classic is just as big as the loaded lineup. Some of the difference makers will include Iverson’s hands-on approach and unprecedented level of accessibility for the players selected for this groundbreaking event. It’s also impossible to ignore the bigger picture significance of Iverson hosting his own high school star game twenty-three years after he missed out on the 1994 McDonald’s All-American event.
“It just made sense to bring these kids here, to this community, to let them experience where Allen came from, what his true roots are,” says Bates, “This event will be another stepping stone towards changing the culture of basketball as a whole. We will impact millions of lives through this and give young men, women, and kids a reason to pick up a basketball every day and be better in the game of life”.
The three-day event will also include a 3-point shootout and dunk contest on April 19 at Bethel High School, where Iverson was a dual-sport athlete. On April 20, the all-star festivities will include an awards banquet in which the Allen Iverson High School Player of the Year will be named. The weekend culminates with main event tips on April 21 at Churchland High School.
