Recap: Meadowcreek vs. GAC Exhibition

By Jaron Mathurine, 11/09/18, 9:45AM EST

The energy was rocking, the hype was there, and the champions were ready to play. For the entire first half and most of the third quarter, there was a consistent back-and-forth from both teams. Hunter McIntosh and Roy Dixon were tone setters for GAC early on as they matched the scoring of Jalen Benjamin, Damian Dunn, and Jamir Chaplin early on.

As the end of the third quarter approached, Meadowcreek showed why they are considered one of the best defensive teams in the state - even with Amari Kelly and Cory Hightower going on to play at the next level. While we'll have to wait further into the season to see if this year's defensive unit will be on par with last year's, the sample from the other night should bode well for Meadowcreek.  It was the quartet of Dunn, Chaplin, Benjamin, and Green being too much - the Mustangs pressed and capitalized on rare stretch of turnovers by GAC. Their offense is even more intriguing given how it varies from last year's championship team. Jalen Benjamin and Damian Dunn offer the Mustangs perimeter options that keep pressure coming on the inside as well - with Dunn's midrange game and strength to the cup along with Jalen Benjamin being a hard player to stay in front of given his jumpshot, usage of angles, and ability to hit tough shots. Meadowcreek picked up the 56-43 victory, but AAA state champ, GAC, showed some of the toughness, guard play, and additional weapons that fueled last year's state title and provides high hopes going into this season. The Spartans are also without big man Christopher Hinton - who is still playing football for the next few weeks.
